A Large Number of Weekend Getaways Are Located Around New York

As wonderful as the city of New York is, there are days when it's nice to get away from the hustle and bustle. If you're ready to get away without having to go too far, you're in luck! There are many spots within just an hour or two of NYC that you can go to enjoy bike rides, rustic camping, or just mellowing out in a lovely B&B.

There is also a great deal of history in and around New York City. If you are interested in one of the many stories around the American Revolutionary War, such as the story of Hamilton, a trip to Saratoga, New York or to Monmouth Battlefield State Park in New Jersey may need a spot on your bucket list. If you have a bit more time, consider a train ride down to Richmond, VA and a drive to Yorktown. This article will look at some of the best weekend getaways around New York. 

1 - Bear Mountain State Park, NY

If you love to hike or need a bit of forest bathing, a trip to Bear Mountain State Park is most definitely in order. This state park is just over an hour from the city and offers the chance to hike, bike, fish, swim and picnic. Book a room at the Bear Mountain Inn, bring your tent or rent a cabin for a lovely time away from the high energy living of New York City. Get a spa treatment or linger by the campfire. Your relaxation preferences will be fulfilled here!

2 - Beacon, NY

Pack your Birkenstocks and check out the work of local artists in Beacon, NY. This lovely city is under two hours from NYC and is loaded with galleries, interesting shops and cozy B&Bs. If you feel like a bit more exercise, this is also the home of Beacon Mountain. This is the highest point of the Hudson Highlands and a great place to hike, climb and scramble, and check out local wildlife. You can be as hippie or as rustic as you need to be in Beacon.

3 - New Hope, PA

If it's been a while since you have been on a bike, New Hope is the spot for you. You'll be less than two hours from NYC and in the center of the beauty of Bucks County. Take your bike down the Delaware Canal path, hike the local wildflower meadows, and support the conservancy work of Bowman's Hill Wildflower Preserve. If you're fascinated by the interest in RV's, consider renting one at the Timberlane Campground. Pack in your favorite one-pot foods, linger under the trees, and fill up with fresh air.

4 - Phoenicia, NY

You can soothe your soul and catch some sun during a float down the local rapids of Esopus Creek on your trip to Phoenicia, NY. For those who want to test out their camping gear, a trip to the Black Bear Camping Ground is a great start. Camping here is somewhat rustic, but the shopping nearby is terrific if you realize you've forgotten something. There are also many amenities at the campground, including bike trails, equine trails, great hiking and ziplines for the more adventurous. No matter what, don't miss Kaaterskill Falls!
